Polar bears are the largest bear species. They tend to weigh between 440 and 1760 pounds with an overall body length of 8 feet 5 inches. These animals have a distinctive all white coat, triangular profile, long neck, and small ears.
The nose, lips and all skin under the fur are black. The bears have very wide front paws, which are very helpful for paddling through arctic waters. These animals use their hind feet as rudders. One of the peculiarities of their appearance is that the bears have no eyelashes. Otherwise, they would freeze in the cold.
Polar bears have heavy fur, dense under fur, and a rather thick layer of insulating fat, which allows these animals to maintain a normal body temperature when the outside temperature drops to -37 degrees C. The polar bear's warm coat is waterproof. Sometimes a polar bear will lie down on the snow to let heat escape from its body.
When polar bears walk, their front paws turn inward. These animals are full-grown at about five or six years of age.
Polar Bears - Pictures - Hibernation
Polar bears do not enter deep hibernation, but enter a state of carnivore lethargy. Only pregnant female polar bears hibernate. And, although hibernating polar bear females sleep soundly, they are easily and quickly aroused.
When hibernating, a female's body temperature may drop to 35C, or it may remain normal at 37C. Unlike most other hibernators, female polar bears give birth while hibernating.
