Polar Bears - Pictures - Reproduction
Female polar bears become sexually mature at about 5 to 6 years old. Males reach sexual maturity by the age of 10-11 years. Polar bears tend to mate between March and May with a delayed implantation occurring in September or October. A polar bear's litter can consist of up to four cubs. However, there is very little chance that all cubs in the litter will survive. One or two cubs is much more common. The cubs will remain with their mother for up to two and a half years.
These animals do not mate for life but form pairs during the breeding season. Males and females can be seen together only for about three days, when the female polar bear is in estrus. The breeding season is usually in late winter through early spring. The gestation period is from 195 to 265 days.
The cubs are born in November or December, after a gestation period of 7 - 8 months. Newborn polar bears are only the size of a rat, weighing 450 - 900g. They are blind and hairless. However, they grow very quickly feeding on their mother's milk. At the time when they leave the den in March or April, they are about the size of a domestic cat. The young polar bears live with their mother for the first three years of their life.

Polar bears are almost exclusively carnivores. They feed upon ringed and bearded seals, young walruses and narwhal or beluga. Polar bears may also eat carrion, berries or other plant material when it is available.
